1. Meats – Lean beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. (no deep fried or fried)
2. Breads and Grains – Whole grain, rice (brown or wild), red potatoes (no mashed), rolls (whole grain, wheat or sour dough), etc.
3. Salad – Mix greens, romaine or spinach – No iceberg or head lettuce
4. Dressings – Olive or canola oil – no corn syrup
5. Butter – no margarine or hydrogenated oils
6. Vegetables – raw, marinated, lightly sautéed
7. Fruits
8. Soups – Tomato based, bean, turkey/beef vegetable, etc. (no cream or soft cheese based soups)
9. High fiber foods when possible – e.g. - whole grain, oatmeal, beans, peas, legumes and mixed nuts.
10.Breakfast items: low sugar muffins, eggs, whole wheat toast, fruit, corn bread, sourdough- wheat or whole grain English muffins, etc. (no high sugar carbohydrates); natural peanut butter, hard boiled eggs
11.Desserts – low sugar or sugar substitutes (ex: Splenda, fructose crystals, Stevia, etc.)
No aspartame (NutraSweet or Equal)
12.Salt – low salt or utilize sea salt
13.Drinks – Try to minimize high sugar (corn syrup and high fructose) soft drinks and juices (low glycemic index - Low GI = 55 or less Medium GI = 56 – 69 High GI = 70 or more)
